The problem of supplying households and industry with natural gas became a sensitive issue on the entire European continent. Lack of agreement between Russia and Ukraine, the blockade of natural gas supply in the middle of the winter of 2005 and 2006, the struggle for taking control over the gas transit lines situated on the territory of Ukraine, which neighbors Moldova, shuttered the minds in the last years and generated some dubious reactions over the existing state of relations in the former soviet region, which have been established after the „more or least pleasant divorce” of its former republics and provoking tensions with the Central and Western European states.

By all accounts, Moldova is one of the poorest countries of Europe . Like in many other transitional countries, poverty and inequality have risen substantially during the last decade. It is also true that poverty and misrule have driven so many citizens out of the country that their payoffs sent back home to their families and relatives have created a false illusion of prosperity.

Despite some relaxing position in the recent polls , the leaders of the still largely unreformed Communist ruling party (CPM) in Moldova seemed to walk through a state of panic since the end of 2004. The recent ‘horticultural upheavals’ scared to death some of its leaders, exposing a deep sense of their vulnerability to the ‘soft-power’ changes that produced a number of notorious defections in Ukraine and Georgia.
