The annual EPIN meeting was held as planned on Dec 9-11, 2008, in Minsk and was hosted by IPM Research Center, EPIN member institution from Belarus.

CER announced the release of new publications

Center for Economic Research announced the release of the following publications: "Uzbekistan Almanac 2008" - a new statistical reference for important country statistics. The annual publication provides the most complete data on demographic situation, employment, education and others. Special focus is given to highlight the indicators, characterizing the regions and current developments of the major branches of the economy.

The latest issue of "Uzbekistan Almanac" is available in three languages (Russian, English, Uzbek).

IDIS “Viitorul” in partnership with Gagauz-Yeri local authorities released a Guide “Gagauzia: opportunities for investment” on December 24, 2008. The Guide is a key-component of the program “Developing economies locally through action and alliance (DELTA) Gagauzia”, co-sponsored by Soros Foundation Moldova and implemented by IDIS “Viitorul”.

The following indicators were identified as social pressures in 2008: political life and its actors in country, expected support for political parties, political ideas associated with parties, neighbors and external routes.

CASE— Fiscal Stimulus Packages: Can They Rescue the Economy?

Leszek Balcerowicz, a member of CASE's Supervisory Council and  Andrzej Rzonca, an adjunct professor at the Warsaw School of Economics were interviewed for the Financial Times newspaper. They argue that Fiscal stimulus packages do not necessarily boost the confidence of consumers, especially in countries where the ratio of public debt to gross domestic product is already high. CASE completed the study of knowledge-based enterprises

In December 2008, CASE has completed a project implemented in partnership with the School of Slavonic and East European Studies of University College London (SSEES UCL) aimed at studying over 300 knowledge-based enterprises (KBEs) in six transition countries—Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland and Romania.

The Human Development Policy and Research Network (HDPN) – an expansion of the Economic Policy Institute Network (EPIN) - seeks to support and promote initiatives aimed at improved understanding of the economic aspects of human development, social inclusion and strengthening regional cooperation in Eurasia. At the moment, the Network is looking for a Facilitator to support the implementation of the activities related with the Human Development Umbrella project and will be responsible for the online facilitation of HDPN.

CASE - Seminar on the euro and process in EMU

On November 19, 2008, CASE held a Policy Research Seminar where Dr. Przemyslaw Wozniak argued that contrary to the general belief that the introduction of the euro raised the general price level in the EMU, the euro had a price-dampening effect, especially on consumer goods. This argument is based on the conclusions that one currency enables greater price transparency, fosters cross-border trade, and increases competition in the EU market. CASE - Publication on FDI in CIS

CASE published a new research work “The Motives and Impediments to FDI in the CIS” that investigates the motivations of foreign-owned companies to invest in non-oil economies of the Commonwealth of Independent States, mainly in Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan on the basis of three types of incentives: market-seeking, resource-seeking and efficiency-seeking.

EPIN annual meeting to be held in Mink, Belarus

The annual EPIN meeting is planned to take place on Dec 9-11, 2008, in Mink, Belarus. IPM Research Center, EPIN member institution from Belarus, will be a hosting organization. The presentation of all eight completed research works conducted under EPIN Small Grants Scheme is planned to take place. The research works were conducted by the junior researchers at the EPIN member institutions and are published here. Another important event to take place during the meeting is a presentation of the Human Development Research and Policy Network (HDPN), the next, more advanced, stage of EPIN.
